CANAL SIGNWRITING

UNIVERISTY PROJECT

My final university project is a hand-painted typeface based on canal narrowboat signwriting in the West Midlands. I installed the typeface onto post-industrial canal sites, spelling the names of manufacture plants that operated on that stretch of canal.

My work aims to uplift the community by re-introducing signwriting as a local folk art whilst simultaneously educating people on the local history. The canal installations lead to many conversations with pedestrians, who stopped to ask questions about my work. To directly engage with the community so positively was a key success of the project.
